Blue Card - Safety Awareness Training (Construction) National Code 51466

New requirements for safety awareness training for workers employed on construction sites in Western Australia apply from 1 Janauary 2007. To meet these new requirements, this Safety Awareness Certificate program has been developed as an enabling program that is nationally accredited. Successful completion of the Safety Awareness Training will result in the issuing of the Construction Safety Awareness Training Card known in the industry as the Blue Card. Completion of the program is designed to 'enable' people to work in the building and construction industry.

Course Outline and Content

Module 1: OSH - The Law, Your Employer and You
including:

  • legislation, regulations, codes of practice, guidelines and standards
  • right to refuse work
  • responsibility for regulation by WorkSafe
  • general duties of care - public safety, employee, employer, manufacturers and suppliers
  • safety and health representatives and safety and health committees
  • resolution of safety and health issues
  • workplace policies and procedures
  • reporting of serious occurrences, injuries and hazards
  • workers' compensation

Module 2: Managing Risks in the Workplace
including:

  • understanding the meaning of hazard and risk
  • risk assessment/management
  • control methods for managing risks
  • job safety analysis worksheets
  • five steps to complete a JSA
  • emergency procedures and response plans
  • emergency situations
  • emergency response training

Module 3: Staying Safe in the Building and Construction Industry
including:

  • employee responsibility
  • effects of shift work
  • how to manage the effects of shift work
  • fatigue
  • your personal alertness
  • diabetes
  • obesity
  • depression
  • safety management systems
  • benefits of a safety management system
  • examples of safety rules - equipment and tool safety
  • accident investigation
  • the most common causes of accidents
  • housekeeping
  • personal protective equipment
  • prevention of skin cancer, eye damage and mosquito born viruses
  • summary of PPE
  • safe manual handling
  • alcohol and other drugs at the workplace
  • smoking
  • alarm systems and emergency exits/escape routes
  • responding to emergencies
  • emergency equipment

Module 4: Environment and Other Considerations
including:

  • the working environment and weather conditions
  • heat stress
  • hypothermia
  • safety signage
  • tag and lock out isolation procedures
  • environmental issues and responsibilities
  • vegetation
  • native fauna
  • water pollution
  • atmospheric pollution
  • entry into confined spaces
  • working at heights
  • safety rules for working on ladders
  • electrical safety
  • hazardous substances

Assessment Method

A written assessment will be carried out at the conclusion of the programme and it will consist
of three types:

True / False questions
Multiple Choice
Written Questions

Candidates are required to achieve a mark of 80% to achieve competency.


Other Information

Prerequisites: 

Read and write simple sentences in the English language

Requirements: 

2 Forms of ID are required to be admitted to this course.

Accepted ID include:

  • Drivers Licence
  • Passport
  • Proof of Age Card
  • Medicare Card
  • ATM Card

If you have insufficient ID on the day you will not be admitted and a fee of 50% of the course fee will apply to rebook for another day.

Further Information:

Participants already working in the construction industry may be entitled to a rebate of up to 80% of their fee from the Building and Construction Industry Training Fund (BCITF). Refund Application forms will be issued on the day of training.
